Amherst County sits directly north of Lynchburg across the James River and shares that city's labor market, with the US 29 corridor through Madison Heights carrying nearly all of the county's retail and commercial activity. Sweet Briar College and a modest manufacturing base support the interior, but outside the 29 corridor and the town of Amherst the county is rural, forested and lightly served by utilities.
