Cleveland County lies in the southwestern Piedmont along I-85, anchored by Shelby as the seat and by Kings Mountain and Boiling Springs to the east toward the Charlotte metro. Albemarle's lithium mining and processing complex in Kings Mountain has turned that end of the county into an active industrial and housing market, distinct from the farmland surrounding Shelby.
