Tazewell County is a southwest Virginia coalfield market along US-460 where Richlands, Bluefield and the town of Tazewell hold the commercial base, with Clinch Valley Medical Center, Southwest Virginia Community College and remaining coal and gas operations as the anchors. The economy has been contracting with coal, and steep terrain leaves very little level, utility-served ground, so reclaimed mine sites and the US-460 corridor are where industrial development is actually possible.
